Walls of Transgression

The idea for the poster exhibition Walls of Transgression came with the plan for the conference Negotiating the Revolt: Punk in Times of Political Transformation (15. – 18. 5. 2025). We decided to exhibit works that reflect the post-revolutionary transformation of the anarcho-punk and hardcore scene. Hand-crafted, playful or strongly expressive motifs and collages represent walls of transition for us, where the original emphasis on subcultural attributes changes in favor of radical social activism. For us, posters represent important mediators of contemporary events as well as contemporary remembrance.

The exhibition refers primarily to the situation in Slovakia, but also to the existence of a strong Czech-Slovak connection, which was a significant driver of this gradual change. We selected 90 works from the period 1989 – 1995, which allows us to follow, in addition to the visuals of the posters, the themes that resonated at the time. Several of the events were important in the development of the domestic scene, but some did not happen in the announced form, and two did not take place at all.
